The buoyancy of water reduces impact on joints, allowing for longer training sessions with less risk of injury. Swimming presents a distinct profile compared to other endurance sports. Testosterone is a crucial hormone in both men and women, although it is present in significantly higher concentrations in men. Swimming engages nearly every muscle group in the body, providing a full-body workout with minimal impact on the joints.
Cristina Villanueva, an investigator at CREAL, thinks the study’s findings seem plausible in the context of limited evidence from other studies. The study seems well conducted, despite its limitations, says Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, a research professor at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL). They can’t definitively say that the hormone reductions observed will cause reproductive harm, but they conclude that the potential for reproductive problems such as reduced sperm production is plausible. These were primarily backyard pools that study coauthor Alfred Bernard, a professor of toxicology at Catholic University of Louvain, says tend to be less prone than public pools to have elevated concentrations of urine and other organic matter. The study population consisted of 199 primarily white boys aged years who swam regularly in indoor and/or outdoor chlorinated pools, and 162 similar boys who swam most frequently in an indoor pool disinfected with copper–silver ionization (but also swam at times in indoor or outdoor chlorinated pools).
There are several limitations to the study, such as the lack of many types of measurements of water quality and disinfection by-products in the pools and the absence of data on testis size and other indicators of each boy’s pubertal status. Bernard and coauthor Marc Nickmilder, also of Catholic University of Louvain, accounted for factors such as age, body mass index, time of day of blood sampling, smoking status, having been breastfed, consumption of tap or bottled water since babyhood, insecticide use, residential proximity to a busy road, and participation in certain other sports. The boys who swam the most in indoor chlorinated pools had concentrations of inhibin B and total testosterone about 20% lower than those of boys who swam in the pool disinfected with copper–silver ionization, and the former were about 3 times more likely than the latter to have abnormally low concentrations of these hormones.
While swimming primarily affects testosterone, it can indirectly influence estrogen levels. While swimming engages multiple muscle groups, it’s generally not as effective for building significant muscle mass as resistance training. Chronic overtraining, regardless of the activity, can suppress testosterone. Several studies show that acute bouts of moderate-intensity swimming can lead to a temporary increase in testosterone, similar to other forms of exercise. Research specifically investigating the effects of swimming on testosterone is somewhat limited compared to studies on weightlifting or running.
The animals were adapted to water one week before starting swimming training. Additionally, Cheng et al. found that ISO administration contributes to decreased testosterone levels and detrimental morphological changes in the testes . Furthermore, the ISO-induced abnormalities were successfully restored by voluntary physical exercise in female rats with estrogen hormone deficiency .
Cycling is an activity that puts excessive stress on the body, especially around the scrotal sac that contains the testicles. The testosterone formed in the testicles plays a significant role in the normal development and functioning of male sexual features. Whole-body insulin action, as determined by insulin and glucose responses during a 120 min, 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, did not change with training in either the men or women. Combine swimming with Coll-U-Gen for cartilage support, Omega-3 Fish Oil for anti-inflammatory balance, and Magnositol for muscle recovery. The warm water of heated pools (82-86 degrees F) relaxes muscles and increases joint flexibility. Testosterone, as a hormone that contributes to muscle development and strength, can potentially enhance swimming performance. Testosterone is a hormone primarily produced in the testes and plays a crucial role in male development and overall health. In this article, we will explore the effects of TRT on swimming performance and endurance. While women have significantly lower testosterone levels than men, the principles are similar. What are the symptoms of low testosterone in male swimmers? How does swimming compare to other endurance sports like running or cycling in terms of testosterone impact? Research on the specific effects of swimming on testosterone is somewhat limited and often yields mixed results.
Simultaneously, water resistance provides 12-15x more resistance than air, meaning every movement builds strength without impact. Water provides buoyancy that reduces effective body weight by 50-90% depending on immersion depth — eliminating the impact loading that makes running and jumping painful for people with joint issues.
