The Government of India has responded to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose more substantial tariffs. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable.” The ministry stated that the European Union imports more from Russia than India does and that India began importing Russian oil after traditional supplies were diverted to Europe. It also noted that the United States had previously encouraged these imports to strengthen the global energy market. The government asserted that like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interest and economic security.
